The members of India’s World Cup 2023 squad were revealed by the country’s captain Rohit Sharma and top selector Ajit Agarkar. However, they did not include anything that was unexpected. On the other hand, the fact that Sanju Samson was not chosen has let down a lot of people.
At a news conference held in Kandy on September 5, India’s captain Rohit Sharma and top selector Ajit Agarkar revealed the team’s 15-member roster for the next World Cup tournament. It came as no surprise that there were no last-minute additions or shocks made to the roster. In fact, only three players from the group that went to the Asia Cup were cut from the team. Tilak Varma, Prasidh Krishna, and Sanju Samson did not make the cut, as Suryakumar Yadav was chosen instead of them.
Because Surya hasn’t made the most of his opportunities when he’s had them, his selection as a starter has been called into question. In his 26 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), he has only managed an average of 24.33, whereas Samson has managed an average of 55.71 in the ODIs that he has played thus far in his career. Tilak Varma was always a left-field selection for the Asia Cup, and with no chances given in the group stage, it was expected that he would not make the squad. Prasidh Krishna, on the other hand, is unlucky to miss out as three specialist pacers Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Shami have made it to the squad. Among other players, Prasidh Krishna is among those who are unfortunate to miss out.
It is interesting to note that KL Rahul was selected for the team despite the fact that he did not participate in any matches prior to the squad selection. After suffering a niggle that prevented him from competing in the Asia Cup group stage, he has been confirmed fit to return. The decision has been met with disapproval from the supporters, many of whom were of the opinion that Samson should have been selected ahead of Rahul and Surya. Although reserve or backup players weren’t specifically identified in the press conference, many people held out hope that Samson would at least be included on that list. In addition to that, Sanju has not been included in the Indian team that will compete in the Asian Games, which is a shocking development. It is not yet clear whether or if he was added to the lineup for the Asian Games at the eleventh hour. If so, it would be interesting to see what kind of role he plays.

We wish Team India best of luck for the World Cup 2023.
